Volocopter GmbH (Germany) – Strategic-Technological Assessment
Volocopter GmbH is a German pioneer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, best known for its urban air mobility (UAM) concepts. Founded in 2011 by Stephan Wolf and Alexander Zosel[1], the Bruchsal-based company has developed all-electric multicopters for passenger and cargo transport (the VoloCity air taxi and VoloDrone cargo UAV) supported by a digital operations backbone (VoloIQ)[2][3]. Volocopter has attracted major investors (including Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Group, Geely [China], Intel Capital, and others[4][5]) and has demonstrated its aircraft in Europe and beyond. Today it maintains R&D and production in Germany and Singapore. However, Volocopter’s fortunes have recently turned: it entered insolvency proceedings in late 2024, and in March 2025 it was reorganized under Austrian Diamond Aircraft (Wanfeng/China) while retaining its German engineering base[6].
