The Vulnerability and Militarization of Space Infrastructures
The growing vulnerability of space infrastructures and the progressive militarization of civilian satellites represent one of the most sensitive issues in contemporary strategy. In the past, satellites were largely conceived as support tools, useful for communications and observation, but framed in a predominantly technical and almost neutral dimension. Today, by contrast, they have become vital nodes upon which both the conduct of military operations and the stability of global economic systems depend. The interconnection between civilian and military services makes every orbital asset a potential target, turning space into an increasingly contested domain. Navigation, force coordination, logistics, and deterrence all rely on infrastructures that cannot be easily defended. The result is an ever-stronger perception of fragility, which fuels the race to develop systems for defense, resilience, and at the same time, offensive capabilities to deny adversaries the use of their own orbital resources.
