Sodern is a French aerospace and defence technology company specialising in neutron generators and optical space navigation sensors. Established in 1962 to develop neutron initiators for France’s nuclear deterrence programme, the firm has evolved into a specialised supplier of neutron tubes, neutron generators, and star trackers used in both defence and civilian applications. Today Sodern operates as a subsidiary of ArianeGroup, with minority participation by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), placing it firmly within the European defence-industrial perimeter. Its technology portfolio combines neutron-based sensing systems used for material analysis and nuclear detection with precision optical instruments used for satellite and missile navigation. These technologies occupy a critical enabling layer of the European security architecture: neutron generators support inspection of cargo and infrastructure for hidden nuclear or radiological materials, while star trackers provide autonomous orientation for satellites and missiles operating in environments where satellite navigation signals are degraded or denied.
