Sepsiscan – Strategic-Technological Analysis (Latvia)

Aug 22, 2025
∙ Paid

Sepsiscan is a Latvian deep-tech spin-off that has developed a portable, AI‐driven medical device for early sepsis detection in intensive care units (ICUs). Sepsis is a critical global healthcare challenge – affecting ~49 million people per year and causing nearly 11 million deaths[1]. Sepsiscan’s non-invasive imaging system analyzes blood microcirculation and oxygen saturation via multispectral camera and machine-learning algorithms, aiming to alert clinicians to nascent sepsis before symptoms become clinically evident[2][3]. Founded in 2023 as a University of Latvia laboratory spinoff, Sepsiscan exemplifies a European academic innovation pushing into advanced diagnostics. This analysis examines Sepsiscan from a European strategic autonomy and defense‐technology perspective. It reviews the company’s technological capabilities, development status, and contributions to EU/NATO objectives – not only in healthcare resilience but also in potential dual‐use for military field medicine. While Sepsiscan’s core product is medical rather than weaponry, its EU‐owned sensor and AI technology may impact strategic supply chains in critical care. We assess corporate structure, R&D pipeline, participation in European programs, and gaps relative to EU defense and health priorities, with full citations to official sources.
