PhotonicSweden: Building Sweden’s Photonics Ecosystem for European Strategic Autonomy
A Swedish ecosystem platform supporting photonics innovation, industrial coordination, and defence-relevant capability development across Europe
PhotonicSweden is best understood not as a prime contractor or proprietary defence manufacturer, but as a strategic ecosystem actor operating at the intersection of research, industry, and innovation support in one of Europe’s most important enabling technology domains. By coordinating Sweden’s optics and photonics landscape and participating in EU-level strategy and innovation programmes, it contributes indirectly but meaningfully to European strategic autonomy in sensing, secure communications, advanced manufacturing, and other dual-use capability areas. Its importance lies less in the delivery of deployable hardware than in its role in strengthening the industrial, technological, and human-capital foundations upon which European photonics resilience and future defence-relevant capacity depend.
