ORiS – Orbital Recharge in Space (Italy): Strategic-Technological Analysis
In the new space age, energy has become as critical a resource as data. ORiS – Orbital Recharge in Space is an Italian deep-tech startup aiming to eliminate power constraints for satellites and remote systems through wireless energy transmission. Founded as a spin-off of Politecnico di Torino in 2024, ORiS is developing orbital “power stations” that beam electricity via high-power lasers to where it’s needed – from satellites in eclipse to drones in flight. This ambitious venture sits at the nexus of Europe’s space ambitions and defense needs. By enabling uninterrupted operations of spacecraft and unmanned vehicles, ORiS promises to strengthen European autonomy in space and reduce reliance on vulnerable fuel supply lines on the ground. The following analysis examines how this young company’s technology and strategy contribute to European strategic autonomy, NATO interoperability, and the reduction of dependencies on non-allied suppliers, all through the lens of cutting-edge power-beaming innovation.
