Navantia, S.A. is Spain’s flagship naval shipbuilder – a state-owned enterprise with origins in the 2005 merger of historic shipyards (formerly Bazán). Headquartered in Madrid[1], Navantia designs and builds advanced warships, submarines and civilian vessels, and has branched into cutting-edge domains like offshore wind foundations and hydrogen energy systems[2][3]. Today it is “a benchmark in both military and civil shipbuilding, as well as in advanced defense systems and services”[2], with a highly export‑oriented profile. In recent years Navantia has joined pan‑European consortia (e.g. the European Patrol Corvette PESCO project) and won major EU research grants, reflecting its strategic role in European naval autonomy. Its R&D agenda spans AI‑enhanced C4I, high-speed optical satellite links, autonomous unmanned vessels, and green propulsion – all priorities for Europe’s defence innovation push[2][4]. This report examines Navantia’s corporate structure, technology portfolio and partnerships in the context of EU/NATO goals, highlighting how it can bolster Europe’s defence-industrial base, enhance deterrence and reduce dependency on non-allied suppliers.
