Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (imec) vzw occupies a distinctive place in the European strategic technology landscape because it is not primarily a defence prime contractor, but an enabling industrial-research node whose value lies in strengthening Europe’s control over critical semiconductor and photonic capabilities. Based in Belgium and operating at the intersection of frontier R&D, pilot-line infrastructure, process integration, and industrial collaboration, imec helps compress the distance between laboratory innovation and manufacturable technology in domains that increasingly underpin defence electronics, secure communications, sensing, computing, and resilient digital systems. Its significance therefore rests less on visible weapons-platform exposure than on its role in supporting the technological foundations of strategic autonomy: reducing dependency on non-allied supply chains, reinforcing Europe’s ability to develop and industrialise advanced microelectronics within its own ecosystem, and providing capabilities that are directly relevant to both dual-use competitiveness and long-term defence preparedness.
