IDUN Technologies - The Smartwatch for Your Brain

IDUN Technologies AG is a Swiss deep-tech startup spun out of ETH Zurich in 2017[1][2], pioneering a wearable brain-computer interface in the form of EEG-sensing earbuds. Its flagship Guardian device uses patented soft Dryode™ electrodes and AI-driven signal processing to measure cognitive state, sleep patterns, and emotional stress in real time[3][4]. Designed as a “smartwatch for the brain,” IDUN’s platform combines a comfortable in-ear sensor with an app ecosystem and developer API to serve health and consumer markets[3][5]. While currently focused on wellness and audio applications, IDUN’s neurotech has clear dual-use relevance: monitoring warfighter mental workload and resilience aligns with emerging security priorities. European defense policymakers increasingly view neurotechnology as a strategic frontier[6][7]. By offering a European-developed alternative to comparable capabilities (for example, a Chinese “psychological monitoring” sensor[8]), IDUN can contribute to EU and NATO goals of technological sovereignty, improved deterrence, and interoperable human-systems integration. This report examines IDUN’s organization, technologies, and ecosystem through the lens of European strategic autonomy and allied defense requirements. The analysis covers corporate structure, core mission, technology portfolio, readiness and standards, program participation, dual-use strategy, partnerships, market focus, IP assets, leadership expertise, and capability gaps. The findings will indicate how IDUN’s neurotechnology might strengthen Europe’s defense industrial base and reduce dependency on non-allied suppliers, while aligning with NATO interoperability and EU autonomy objectives.
