∙ Paid

Freyr Battery is a Norwegian energy technology venture at the forefront of Europe’s bid for battery self-sufficiency. Founded in 2019, the company set out to build one of Europe’s first giga-scale lithium-ion cell production facilities powered entirely by renewable energy. In a few short years, Freyr captured widespread attention with bold plans to deliver sustainable, high-performance batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and even aviation and space applications. The promise was compelling: dramatically reduce Europe’s dependence on imported Chinese cells by producing greener and cheaper batteries in Scandinavia’s clean-energy hub. Freyr’s rapid rise – from licensing cutting-edge U.S. manufacturing technology to securing major EU funding – exemplified Europe’s drive for strategic autonomy in critical technologies. Yet the journey has been challenging, marked by transatlantic pivots and high-stakes investments. This report explores Freyr’s strategic and technological trajectory, assessing its role in strengthening European defense resilience and industrial sovereignty.
