Fernride is a Munich-based deep-tech scale-up (spin-off of the Technical University of Munich) developing AI-powered autonomous trucking solutions. Its “human-assisted autonomy” platform retrofits electric trucks with cameras, sensors and software that enable remote supervision and automated operation. Founded in 2019 by TUM researchers, Fernride first deployed driverless yard tractors for major logistics operators and is now exploring military logistics applications. Its vision – an integrated human-machine system to tackle driver shortages and boost resilience – speaks directly to Europe’s strategic drive for technological sovereignty. With recent funding rounds reaching €75M[1], the company is positioning itself at the nexus of civilian logistics and defense supply-chain modernization, hinting at broad dual-use potential. The analysis below examines Fernride’s strategic-technical profile in the context of EU autonomy goals, NATO interoperability, deterrence enhancement, transatlantic alignment, and supply-chain resilience.
