Europe’s Naval Air-Defence Radar Industrial Base

Mapping the companies, capability layers, and strategic dependencies shaping naval radar, fire-control, and maritime battlespace awareness in Europe

European naval air-defence capability cannot be understood through a generic survey of the naval sector. The critical issue lies in a narrower and more consequential industrial architecture composed of multifunction radars, fire-control systems, combat-system integration, subsystem suppliers, and the enabling layer of communications, navigation, positioning, and sensor fusion. In this segment, the central analytical problem is not simply which firms are visible at platform level, but which actors control the decisive technological and industrial nodes that determine operational effectiveness, production resilience, and regulatory autonomy. That is why the report treats naval air-defence radar and maritime battlespace awareness as a distinct strategic-industrial field rather than as a secondary branch of naval defence more broadly.

The report is organised around a layered analytical framework. It begins with the strategic and regulatory context that explains why this segment has become increasingly relevant within European capability planning, then develops a capability taxonomy that separates radar primes, fire-control specialists, subsystem suppliers, and the broader battlespace-awareness layer. It then examines the principal companies active in each layer, assesses the relevance of European collaborative programmes to future demand, and analyses regulatory exposure, extra-European dependencies, and potential production bottlenecks. The final section does not produce a simplistic ranking, but identifies differentiated forms of industrial dominance across the various layers of the naval air-defence architecture.
