CREW: for a more efficient use of the wireless spectrum | imec

DYAMAND is a young European deep-tech venture bridging the gap between physical devices and digital applications. Born as a spin-off from Belgium’s imec research institute and Ghent University, this company has developed a novel middleware platform that enables any smart device to communicate with any application in a vendor-agnostic way. In practical terms, DYAMAND’s technology allows disparate sensors, controllers, and software – from smart radiator valves to lighting systems – to integrate seamlessly, overcoming the interoperability barriers that typically plague Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. This capability is especially timely in an era when Europe seeks greater technological autonomy and resilience. By focusing initially on optimizing energy use in buildings, the company addresses a pressing strategic need: reducing energy consumption amid volatile gas prices and geopolitical tensions. Yet the implications go further. DYAMAND’s solution not only promises cost savings and sustainability for civilian users, but also hints at dual-use potential. The same ability to network and orchestrate diverse devices could enhance the efficiency and interoperability of defense infrastructure, aligning with NATO’s drive for smarter bases and multi-domain operations. As European policymakers push to cut dependencies on foreign technologies, a home-grown platform like DYAMAND offers a compelling case study in building sovereignty through innovation. Its journey from academic research to market showcases how Europe’s investment in digital know-how can yield strategic dividends – making this an enterprise to watch for those interested in the continent’s technological edge.
