BirgerMind – Strategic-Technological Analysis

BirgerMind SIA is a Latvian deep-tech startup founded in 2021, headquartered in Liepāja, Latvia[1][2]. It develops a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) to enable fully paralyzed patients to communicate via digital devices[3]. By converting EEG brainwaves into text and commands through proprietary hardware headgear and machine-learning software, the company brings brain-machine integration into a wearable form[3][4]. While primarily positioned as medical assistive technology, the underlying neurotech and AI capabilities have potential defense applications (for example, cognitive command interfaces and soldier health monitoring[5][6]). BirgerMind’s European base means its innovations contribute to the EU’s tech base rather than depending on foreign systems. The startup has participated in EU innovation networks (it won the 2021 EIT Jumpstarter prize, a European health-tech competition[7]), but it has not yet integrated into any formal European Defence Fund or NATO program. This report examines BirgerMind’s strategic and technological profile in the context of European autonomy and defense capabilities, assessing its current assets, gaps, and potential roles in advancing EU security objectives.
