Astrolight – Secure Space-to-Ground Laser Communication (Lithuania)

Astrolight is a Lithuanian deep-tech startup developing high-speed laser communication terminals that link satellites to ground stations. Its vision is to build an “optical backbone” for space, offering a secure alternative to radio-frequency downlinks[1][2]. With satellite constellations projected in the tens of thousands, traditional RF links face bandwidth and security limits[3][4]. Astrolight’s fully integrated approach – combining spaceborne lasers (ATLAS terminals) with portable optical ground stations (OGS-1) – aims to fill this critical gap. Recent demonstrations with ESA and NATO partners have validated the rugged performance of Astrolight’s hardware[5][6]. These early successes in space and maritime environments suggest that European defense planners should watch Astrolight closely. By providing indigenous laser links, it could bolster NATO’s multi-domain communications and reduce reliance on non-EU satellite networks. In an age of contested space, understanding Astrolight’s capabilities offers insight into Europe’s effort to enhance strategic autonomy and allied deterrence.
